It’s unfortunate that the majority of all teens think it is perfectly fine to send text messages while they are driving. States within the United States are cracking down on the act, however, by implementing new laws that regulate or ban the act completely.

Since there is no federal law that says texting while driving is a punishable crime, each state has to individually create and pass legislation to regulate it. Some states such as Washington have banned the act of texting completely. Other states have made it a rule that you have to be a certain age, often 21, before you can legally text and drive.

Some states have shown sympathy for those who text while driving. Missouri is an example of a state that has done so, as it only bans those under the age of 21 from texting and driving. Those over this age can do as they wish at their own discretion. This hasn’t gone over well with some that have been directly affected by texting and driving, but it is a step in the right direction to keep the Missouri roads safe.

The vehicle is a very complex piece of machinery weighing in at over a ton. It’s no surprise, then, that studies show that texting and driving has resulted in many fatalities. Support groups point out that the fatalities are close to numbers of driving under the influence, as studies have been known to show. As legislation lags behind studies, it’s important that parents teach good driving practices to their children to prevent unsafe driving.

Seeing what they have created, mobile phone companies have started developing solutions to the act of texting and driving. Being able to transcribe voice into text is one method that is currently being worked on. Such technology already exists, but making it 100% accurate remains to be what is holding it back. Until a real solution like this can be found, legislation is needed to help keep those who text and drive in check.

Connecting A Computer Network With Packet Tracer

Programs that are meant for engineering professionals never are easy to learn- but practice makes perfect! Packet Tracer is a good example of a tough program released by Cisco, of which even making a small computer network can pose a challenge.

Having a networked based on a hub is easy enough- there isn’t any significant configuration. Putting a router in the network is a different story, however, since it will separate networks. Because it does so, any network containing a router will have at least two different network addresses for proper communication. Configuring them is just a matter of assigning the correct addresses and settings.

Constructing the network will take two crossover cables and a console cable. The two crossover cables will connect each desktop to the Ethernet ports of the router, while the console cable will connect one of the computers to the router for configuring. Be sure that the cable you are using isn’t a straight-through when using your Ethernet cable, as this type of cable is reserved for unlike devices.

The IP addresses you assign will be the logic of the operation. It’s up to you which network numbers and addresses you use, but they must follow a certain convention in order to work. You will be using at least four IP addresses total, counting your two desktop machines and two Ethernet ports on the router. Assign each Ethernet port and IP address that corresponds to a certain network. If you assign both to the same network, you will quickly see the configuration won’t work.

The gateway address is also very important: it allows a computer to connect to a network. The gateway address is configured on the desktop, and it’s value is the same IP address as the Ethernet interface that it is connected to. Without the gateway, information wouldn’t have a way of getting from one network to another. It’s one of the most common rookie mistakes to accidentally leave the gateway address blank.

We can confirm that the network was set up properly by pinging a computer from another. As long as you did everything correctly, you should get a success message when using the command line interface. If you get an error regarding a time out, odds are you have input the wrong IP address information or forgot to open the Ethernet ports of the router. Troubleshooting is a valuable skill to have, so try to fix the problem yourself before asking for help if you get stuck on a problem.

Computer networking students are caught in between a rock and a hard place when going through difficult course studies. Students need access to hardware available in class to do labs and reports, and may not have the same hardware at home to work on. Emulation programs have sought to fix this problem.

Netsim is a program developed by Boson to emulate a network. It’s great because instructors can use it to give out labs, assignments, easily grade said assignments, and instantly get feedback on where students need help. The only downside of the program is that it’s costly- something to the tune of $200 for the least expensive license. Students will probably want to look elsewhere to save money.

Open source programs should receive the attention of students since they are free to download and use. Dynagen is one such program, of which is built with the Dynamips simulator. Dynagen is one of two software packages that currently works with Dynamips, and is often described as being the less friendly of the two. Documentation is also lacking for those with questions.

GNS-3 is another program based on the Dynamips emulator. GNS-3 is more popular among beginners since it has a better interface and better support. GNS-3, or Graphical Network Simulator, has a developer’s forum and video tutorials to get students ready to use the program. It may not have key features that Netsim has, but teachers can still issue this free program to students and have take-home assignments for them to complete.

Self-learners are a breed of students that don’t need classes to obtain their certifications. Although they may be saving money on course costs, they won’t be able to use the best network simulator to date: Packet Tracer. This program is produced by Cisco, who took the time to make the interface amazingly simple to use for such a powerful program. Packet Tracer isn’t available for download to the public, yet if you are alumni or a current student you can access the download area.

There are several web-based programs used with Macromedia Flash and text-based applications that one can look at. These range from free to pricey, just as standalone programs do. Web-based applications can be just as useful, but keep in mind you’ll have to have a constant connection to the Internet to use most of them. Often times it’s just better to get a desktop application for ease of use.

Learning To Overcome Average Mistakes In English Grammar

When you slip up on your grammar, you will look like you are uneducated. If you are in a position such as a job interview, you could easily sacrifice your hard work in getting the interview because of a lack of training in grammar. Luckily, English grammar is easy to get down.

Possession is a common theme in the English language. When you are showing possession with “your,” don’t confuse it with “you’re” or “you are.” Many people, even native speakers, will forget this rule. An example with both words in a sentence would be “The book is yours, but you’re required to keep it clean.” If it helps you at all, mentally replace the contraction with the phrase “you are” to see if it fits correctly.

Probably the second most common mistake in grammar is “there” being confused with “their.” The word “their” shows possession, while “there” is indicating a location. If your neighbors own a pool, you would say “The neighbors often swim in their pool,” and use there as “Sometimes I swim over there.”

This one is a bit more tricky to use: “effect” and “affect.” The word “affect” is used as a verb in just about every situation, while “effect” is a noun. A good example of “affect” would be “The clouds affect the amount of sunlight the ground receives,” while a good example of “effect” would be “Since the rain was gone, there was no effect on driving conditions.” Just remember that “affect” does the action in this case.

When migrating to English from another language, you will agree the change isn’t easy. Some grammar structure is hard to get down, such as using “a” and “an.” When using “an,” you should verify the next word either starts with a vowel or sounds like it does. It’s easy to see that a word starts with a vowel, but a word such as “hour” could throw newcomers off. The best bet would be to learn different words and how they sound to prevent making a mistake.

“Good” and “well” are taught incorrectly in common United States slang. It’s common to say “I am feeling good,” but this is actually not correct. “Good” is not a noun, but instead an adjective. “Well” is a noun, and would instead take the place of good in this case. “I am/am not feeling well” should be the proper response if asked how you are feeling.

Practice English grammar all you can, and your efforts will pay off. It will take a fair amount of time to get all of it down. But once you do, you will appear intelligent and will be able to converse with others without having to sacrifice your self image in the process.
