A babysitter, or nanny, is one who takes care of small children when their parents are not able to. Most often this is because of a job or special event. Being employable as a babysitter isn’t so easy, since parents won’t trust just anyone with their children’s safety.
School history is a great thing to show off. If you achieved high marks in high school or at a university, always boast this fact in a resume. A high grade means you have a good head on your shoulders, and won’t treat children in the wrong manner. If you didn’t achieve high marks, you might want to list organizations that you were a part of as a reference.
All employers look at previous experience when hiring. A high rate of experience means you are very qualified for the job. If you just started a side business as a babysitter, you won’t have the favor of parents you are not familiar with. Consider doing babysitting jobs at a discount rate until you are experienced enough to boast.
Anyone who knows how to network can find a babysitting job, even without previous experience or major selling points. As long as you are friendly and polite, and can bring up the matter in conversation without sounding like a salesman, you can easily obtain new clients. If you don’t have the right connections to start off, you can also look through classifieds, job websites found online, and ask other babysitters in the area as to where they have found their business.
Posting advertisements is a great way to get interest in your service as a babysitter, but it doesn’t compare to giving off a good reputation with current clients. Any clients that see you as a great babysitter will be sure to share the information with their friends. If you want to speed the process up, give them a quick discount in exchange for them mentioning a word or two to friends.
Background checks will be common- so if you don’t have a good record, you better have a great reason for it. A bad record will show parents that you have been irresponsible in the past. This could equate into you now being irresponsible, which is a very bad trait. Don’t let the parents find out that you have a bad record first- always be honest and upfront with any convictions, arrests, speeding tickets, and so forth when going in for an interview.
Final Thoughts
Babysitting has long been the employment of teen and adult females. It’s still going strong as not all parents need a daycare service, or even trust them. Look for classifieds in your local newspaper, over the Internet, and try to get your name out in your general neighborhood.
