He was a California boy that was born in the 1940’s, in Newport Beach. At a very young age, he was preoccupied with tattoo art and wanted to be a tattoo artist. While at the San Francisco Art Institute in the 1960’s, he developed his art of tattooing. When he graduated, with a BA in Fine Arts, his friend Sailor Jerry Collins, helped arrange for him to study under a Japanese Master in Japan. So, in 1973, off to Japan he went, to study.
He and his wife began their first company in 1982, and it was called Hardy Apero Marks Publications. He has currently published over twenty books under this company. Some of the twenty include catalogs of his tattoo work, and the work by Sailor Jerry Collins, who Hardy credits with breaking through on color tattoos.
Not only does he tattoo, but he has also studied tattoo art, and is a historian on the subject of tattoo and tattoo lore. He gave up Yale, for tattoo art. Of course, he is also a painter and etcher.
Hardy’s works are famous and shown in both museums, and at exhibitions. He is not just another tattoo artist, but a true artist. Though he no longer does tattooing himself, he keeps an eye on the business, and the other artists.
He began the Ed Hardy clothing line in 2002 based on his tattoo art. Two years later it had gained the attention of Saks. In 2004, Christian Audigier licensed the rights to produce the line, and in 2009, Iconix bought fifty percent interest in Ed Hardy Brand.
